The Ultimate Spring Championships took place in Barnsley on Sunday 10th March.
The event received players from throughout England and Ireland with just over 250 fighters competing in a range of categories from Pee Wee to Veterans. Daedo electronic scoring was used for all advanced grades.
The event was hosted by Ultimate Taekwondo who have been running competitions for almost 30 years. Each fight was 3 rounds of 1 minute 30 seconds, with Pee Wee and novice Children doing 3 rounds of 1 minute.
Deona represented Gibraltar Taekwondo in the Veterans Female A -67kg and the Senior Female B -67kg grabbing two silver medals.
Her first fight was with a Senior 'Novice' player from the hosting club. The organiser had asked Deona to step in as this player was unmatched. It was a non PSS fight, which she did not have a lot of experience with, since the introduction of PSS system. Deona’s opponent was strong and the pair had a fairly even match.
She then entered into her own category, Veteran's female -67kg A class fight. She won the first round; the second round was a draw- although Deona had hits on the score board, it was the referee's decision to award the round to her opponent. On the third round Deona did pull out her headshots in an attempt to win the match. However, one of the shots did not score. She lost out narrowly 6-7 in the final round.
A lot of positives to take from the fights, and a lot of other things to work on. Deona now shifts her focus to the 2024 TCGB National Championships taking place on the 23rd March in Twickenham.
