International Summer Camp

In mid June we held our first ever International Taekwondo Summer Camp, in Gibraltar.

The purpose of this camp was to showcast what Gibraltar has to offer and bring together Taekwondo enthusiasts. Max Cater, former GB Athlete and LMC HIGH Performance Centre owner, flew over with his team to attend the camp. Within his team was young Alfie Whitfield who is currently part of the British Taekwondo Performance Squad.

The camp, which was planned and organised by both Mr Brandon Avellano and Miss Lorena Garcia, ran for a total of 4 days with numerous training sessions and activities on offer. Apart from Taekwondo the group learnt Wing Chun, a form of Kung Fu, with Mr Richard Reyes, and grappling and real life scenarios with Major Dayan Pozo. Two sessions which were very much enjoyed by attendees. Max also shared his experience and knowledge of Taekwondo leading various training sessions.

Sunday was a fun filled day. It was an early start with the group walking up the Mediterranean Steps, 419m above sea level, close to the summit of the Rock. They then headed over to the Windsor Suspension Bridge which is 71 metres in length with boasting views over the bay. Next was the skywalk which has 360° views of three countries across two continents. Lastly, St Michael’s Cave, which was prepared as an emergency hospital during WWII, has beautiful rock formations, and is now used as a venue for events.

Unfortunately the weather was in for us and our planned SUP session, with In2Adventures, at Sandy Bay had to be cancelled. Nevertheless this didn’t dampen our spirits and the camp continued.

Monday morning saw an open session for all our members to enjoy. It was held at the Europa Sports Complex pitch. This session was led by both Brandon and Max with a total of over 40 students taking part.

We would like to thank Dino and Troy Charvetto and their respective teams, the Gibraltar Tourist Board for helping us sort out Nature Reverse passes, Blands Travel for providing transport, our special guests Dayan Pozo and Richard Reyes, and last but not least both Diana Lozowsky and Freddy Martin for capturing these moments.
